Mariposa County Director and Rangeland and Livestock Advisor

Mariposa, Merced & Madera Counties – closing date September 30, 2012

The University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), a statewide program with local development and delivery, is seeking an academic for the position of Mariposa County Director and Rangeland and Livestock Advisor to conduct a multi-county-based extension, education and applied research program to address livestock production and the management of rangeland ecosystems and watershed health.

The County Director is responsible for the coordination and overall operation of Cooperative Extension programs in Mariposa County.  Responsibilities includes oversight of effective educational and research programs, direction and leadership of academic and support staff assigned to county Extension programs; maintaining effective communication within the University and county government, securing adequate county Extension budgets, developing and maintaining good working relationship with public and private agencies and with Mariposa County.  The County Director assignment may be transitional until Multi-County Partnership is formed in those counties.

The Rangeland and Livestock advisor will develop linkages with individuals, client groups, researchers, policy makers, agencies and organizations relevant to livestock and range management in the three counties.   Many of the producers, owners, and managers would become collaborators on site based educational and research projects.  Outreach methods will include individual consultations, field days, tours, meetings, web conferences, ANR publications, peer-reviewed journals, and an appropriate mix of contemporary and emerging electronic tools such as online learning, web content systems and repositories, social media, impact and evaluation tools, along with specialized and public media outlets.  The academic in this position will be expected to interact with UC ANR Program Teams, Specialists, Advisors and others within the research/extension network to develop, strengthen and expand the local delivery of statewide programs. 

The advisor will develop livestock and range management practices and strategies that enhance rangeland and wildlife habitat, water quality and watershed function.  Serving Mariposa, Merced and Madera Counties, the advisor will address important issues that interface pasture and rangeland livestock production systems and watershed health in the three counties.   Water quality (sustainable natural ecosystems) is one of the high priority issues that this position will address.  Other high priority issues addressed will be management of weeds including biological and cultural control of invasive species (endemic & invasive pests and diseases) and sustainability of natural resource management and land usage in the diverse area including annual grasslands, oak woodlands and forested landscapes.

This position is an academic career track appointment; a minimum of a Master's Degree is required, though other advanced degrees are encouraged, in disciplines of range science, animal science or a closely related field.  The applicant must attain a Certified Rangeland Manager certification within five years of employment;  http://casrm.rangelands.org/HTML/certified.html.   The successful applicant will demonstrate strong research, teaching and collaborative skills.  Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.  Extension experience is desirable.
